Bone Broth and Cabbage Soup

Hello Sistas,
One of my new culinary techniques is to make a bone broth. This week I used a prime rib bone, garlic and shallot to make a salty, yummy, nourishing beef broth. It's chilly and wet this week, and it tasted so good. Low cal too. Then, I decided to add 1/2 head of cabbage for a super low-cal soup. I'm guessing it's no more than 100 calories for a large bowl.

I'm very admiring of both of your exercise programs. I'm a lump, but you've inspired me to work out for the past 3 days. Yay!

  1. Excellent - looks yummy. I can almost taste it. Perfect for a cold, gloomy day. How many shallots do you add? That cabbage is making you so happy. I like to make my own broth out of chicken carcasses or other bones. I use the scraps from cutting up veggies like the peels and tips. I usually use a crock pot and add tons of fresh herbs. I just hate the packaging waste associated with buying broth. Glad you are inspired to work out - I was hoping my sisters would keep me on the path to better health this year.

  2. Just read some stuff about leaky gut. So you make broth to heal your guts and I make it cause I can't stand packaging. Funny.

  3. Fresh herbs=wonderful. I would love to have an herb garden. Do either of you grow them?

  4. Yes in the summer I grow herbs - it is one thing the deer won't eat. You could probably grow them all year. In Houston, I could grow parsley, dill, cilantro and sage in the winter and spring, basil in the summer, and mint, thyme, oregano and rosemary all year. Neale and I are going to get herbs this summer to grow in the house next winter as we hate all the packaging associated with fresh herbs - here I go again with the packaging.

  5. I am getting nice local beef bones from the Co-Op today to make broth. I've made my own broth for years. I had no idea it was so good for you.
